What are "Unseen Gold Covers" you ask? Well... when Ernst and
Mary Gerber put together the Photo-Journal
Guide to Comic Books, they couldn't find an example of EVERY
comic book cover that they wanted to! In some cases these "mising"
comics are repesented by a "White Space" in the books. This simply
meant that there was a placeholder left for the book on the page.
These are also refered to as "Gerber White Spaces." Even with over
20,000 pictures of comic book covers in each volume, not all covers
had a placement. In many cases, Gerber chose a representative number
of covers to show for a given title. This was especially true for the
less collected funny animal, humor, and romance titles. Frequently,
the first few issues would be pictured and then a few of the more
spectacular later issues would be pictured. Thus, there are actually
two categories of unseen gold: "Gerber White Space" covers and just
plain "Not Pictured in the Photo-Journal" covers. As one might
suspect, the Gerber White Space covers almost ALWAYS go for more than
guide (in many cases 2x-5x!). The lesser variety frequently sells
above guide too!
